How to Play a Singing Bowl

There are two ways to play a singing bowl: one, holding the bowl in the palm of your hand or standing the bowl on a cushion. Read on to find out more.

How to Play a Singing Bowl in the Palm of Your Hand

  1. Hold the base of the bowl in the palm of your hand or on your fingertips.
  2. Tilt the bowl towards you at a slight angle.
  3. Hold the mallet supplied with your bowl from the top with the fingertips pointing backwards.
  4. To warm up the bowl ready for play, strike the mallet gently against the side.
  5. Keep your wrist straight.
  6. Now, rotate the base of the mallet slowly around the rim of the bowl. This produces the haunting continuous sound of the singing bowl.

How to Play a Singing Bowl on the Cushion

  1. Place the singing bowl on the cushion provided or on a flat surface.
  2. Gently strike the side of the singing bowl. You can experiment with different sounds from playing close to the rim or further down.
  3. Repeat striking the bowl a number of times, softly or loudly depending on the situation.
  4. Allow the sound to fade away and follow the sound as it fades to silence.

Mindful Practices with Your Singing Bowl

Many people are drawn to buying a singing bowl without really knowing why. There are some mindful practices you can do with your singing bowl that are bound to benefit you and others around you:

  1. Meditation

Each morning when you rise, set aside a few moments for stillness and peace. Find a quiet, comfortable spot on a cushion or chair. Gently strike your singing bowl three times slowly (as described in How to Play a Singing Bowl with a Cushion) with the mallet to bring your awareness into the room and your body.

After striking the singing bowl for the third time, listen as the sound gradually fades away. Then, take a moment to be aware of your body posture, checking your back is nice and straight; not too rigid nor too relaxed.

Then, become aware of your breathing, noticing the “in” and “out” breath. Keep your attention on the breath in this way for a few moments, gently bringing your mind back to the breath if it wanders away.

At the end of the few moments of meditation, pick up your singing bowl and sound it three more times. You are now ready to bring this stillness and calmness to the rest of your day!

  1. Mindful moments

Even if we have done our meditation in the morning, there are bound to be times throughout the day when we need a little more mindfulness and calmness to think clearly. If we have a singing bowl nearby, just pick it up and strike it a few times before a phone call, an important decision to be made or an event that is making your nervous.

  1. Restore order

When things are feeling a bit chaotic, and you are looking for some calm – just use the singing bowl! If you are trying to cook dinner, the kids are running around crazy and you feel like you are about to lose control, just pick up the singing bowl and sound it a few times. (You could try this in your workplace too!)

The calming sound is sure to calm you and bring the kids (or work colleagues) running to see what the sound is, and as you stand or sit there mindfully playing it, watching your breath; your calmness will have a similar effect on those around you. They are bound to want to try it themselves.

  1. Mark out the day

The beautiful sound of a singing bowl can be used as a peaceful marker throughout the day or to alert others when something is starting or finishing.
