About Je Tsongkhapa
Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) was one of Tibet’s most influential Buddhist masters and the founder of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
Renowned as an accomplished scholar and practitioner, Tsongkhapa studied with many great masters and devoted his life to Buddhist philosophy, meditation and monastic discipline. His teachings became the foundation of the Gelug tradition, established in the early 15th century.
Tsongkhapa is traditionally depicted wearing the distinctive yellow pandita hat associated with the Gelug tradition. He is often shown with his hands in the teaching gesture, with a lotus on either side supporting a sword and a book — symbols associated with Manjushri and the wisdom of enlightened understanding.
His legacy continues throughout Tibetan Buddhism, and his teachings remain deeply respected and practised today.
The Art of Silk Appliqué Thangka
Silk appliqué thangka is a highly revered form of Tibetan Buddhist sacred art. Instead of being painted, the image is carefully constructed from individually cut pieces of silk, which are layered, embroidered and stitched together entirely by hand.
This intricate process requires exceptional skill, patience and concentration. Traditionally, silk thangkas are commissioned by monasteries, practitioners and collectors for their beauty, craftsmanship and profound spiritual meaning.
When carefully preserved, silk appliqué thangkas are durable and long-lasting, allowing these remarkable works of Tibetan sacred art to be treasured for generations.
This Tsongkhapa thangka is the result of Urgyen Sonam’s skill, patience, concentration and dedication — an exquisite hand-stitched work of sacred Tibetan art.
