Shakyamuni attained enlightenment after six years of fasting and meditation, became known as Buddha and founded Buddhism. He was born about 2500 years ago as Siddhartha Gautama, a prince and son of the king Suddhodana and queen Mayadevi. He is believed to have had 550 incarnations with more yet to come, but he is called Shakyamuni (the Sage of Shakya Clan), and this is the sage referenced when people talk of ‘The Buddha’.

Silk applique thangka is a highly renowned form of Tibetan Buddhist art.

Monasteries, practitioners and individuals buy this style of thangka for the beauty, quality and deep meaning of the art form.

Traditionally silk thangkas are held in high esteem due to the time consuming nature of hand stitching and embroidery, they are versatile and not subject to deterioration such as occurs with the painting thangkas.

They travel well and look stunning in any setting.

This is the result of Urgyen Sonam’s skill, patience, concentration and dedication and is an exquisite hand stitched work of sacred art.
